May 5th, 2026 was the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirits (MMIWG2S), or Red Dress Day. On Red Dress Day, and every day, we honour the lives and legacies of MMIWG2S by listening to their stories and commemorating their strength and spirits. We stand in solidarity with the families and communities.
Red Dress Day began in 2010, when Métis artist Jaime Black created the powerful art installation, “REDress Project”. Jaime used red dresses as a visual representation of murdered or missing Indigenous women across Canada. The haunting sight of empty red dresses hanging in public places, from trees to lamp posts, was meant to call attention to the startlingly high rates of violence that Indigenous women experience.
The Equinox Drummers performed during a ceremony at the Georgian Bay Native Friendship Centre in Midland, ON, and with the elders at a local shelter.
